The Pitztal is not a village but a valley (the German means "Pitz valley") but it is the description most commonly used for the string of villages along this high mountain valley heading south towards the Italian border, as well as the skiing towards the end of it.
The Pitztal is relatively unknown on the English-speaking ski market but for those looking to take a quick break - especially at the beginning or end of the season - the easy access from the motorway and the position near Innsbruck make this an attractive proposition.
Elevation: 1740 metres (Mittelberg)
Location: 6481 St Leonhard im Pitztal - Tyrol - Austria
Most of the Pitztal is actually part of a nature reserve - the Kaunergrat Naturpark - which gives an idea of the natural beauty of the area. Although there are plenty of tourist facilities, there is not the same "resort atmosphere" that there is in its more famous neighbours to the east and west.
The length of the Pitz valley and the better-known Ötztal with its resorts of Sölden and Obergurgl to the east (and therefore closer to Innsbruck) have probably contributed to the relative obscurity of the skiing in this part of the Tyrol.
However it's not a secret to the locals and the ranges around the Wildspitze, the highest mountain in the Tyrol, attract ski tourers and mountaineers from all over the area.
The best-known of the Pitztal ski areas are the Pitztal Glacier area, which
rises to 3440m at the end of the valley, and the neighbouring Rifflsee family
area, which are covered on our page about the skiing in the valley. A third
area, the Hochzeiger, has recently been expanded.

information about the Pitz valley ski resorts
Getting to the Pitztal is relatively simple from the usual west of Austria
airports as the Inn valley motorway provides great access to the start of the
valley. However, the valley itself is a lengthy one of just under 40km.

The Pitztal has plenty of four- and three-star hotel accommodation - either
